This web service technology is far more secure than the VPN connections offered by our competitors. The DMS is never directly exposed to the internet - rather, a network client acts as the "gatekeeper," protecting the DMS. The dealer is in total control of the User ID and Password, and also has the ability to power off the PC.

From a security standpoint, eDATA is, in a word: superior.

  • The eDATA manager will respond only to our web service, which is SSL encrypted and VeriSign certified. If the VeriSign certification fails, the eDATA manager will shut down.

  • The eDATA communications manager utilizes a formal eDATA function set, including commands such as "write single deal" and "read deals in date range."

  • The eDATA manager implements the IP equivalent of a "dial-back" - it verifies the web service, and the web service authenticates the eDATA manager.


VPN connections clearly fall short on security because:

  • To penetrate the DMS via a VPN, an attacker requires only the target IP address - which is easy to find - the ID, and the password.

  • Someone on a VPN need not use a formal set of functions, he can operate the DMS any way he likes.

  • VPN authentication is only one-way.
